The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and senior Hamas official Mohammed Deif, over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Netanyahu and Gallant have been accused of actions such as starvation as a method of warfare, while Hamas official Deif faces charges for orchestrating violence against civilians.
The warrants obligate ICC member states to arrest the accused if they travel abroad, however Israel will not enforce them domestically as they do not recognise the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court.
While Israel has dismissed the warrants as politically motivated, Gaza-based political analyst Muhammad Sehahda described the development as a “huge moment of relief” for the Palestinian people.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong commented on the news by emphasising the respect for the ICC’s independence and reiterated the importance of international humanitarian law.
