The Victorian government’s Suburban Rail Loop project will continue, despite concerns about the rollout of its new public transport ticket system.
Terra Verde, a global transport construction consortium, has been awarded a 1.7-billion-dollar tunnelling contract for the eastern section of the rail loop development.
The deal is to build ten-kilometre twin tunnels between Glen Waverley and Box Hill,
A second consortium has already signed a 3.6-billion-dollar deal to tunnel the rest of the stretch from Cheltenham.
The State government said the latest tunnelling deal came in under what was initially budgeted, but Premier Jacinta Allan did not disclose the amount.
The entire 90-kilometre orbital rail line is designed to run from Cheltenham to Werribee, via Melbourne Airport.
