New figures from the UN Human Rights Office have revealed that nearly 70 per cent of verified deaths in the Gaza conflict have been women and children.
This data highlights a “systematic violation” of international humanitarian law principles, including proportionality and distinction.
Since the conflict’s escalation, the UN has verified 8,119 deaths through a stringent three-source process, though Palestinian health authorities have reported over 43-thousand fatalities.
The UN noted that 44 per cent of the victims are minors, primarily aged 5-14 years, mirroring Gaza’s demographics.
Israel’s diplomatic mission to the UN dismissed the findings, accusing the report of overlooking the role of Hamas in civilian harm.
Since the conflict reignited, around 1.9 million people in Gaza remain displaced.
The UN has emphasised the importance of collecting evidence for future accountability through credible judicial bodies, and has highlighted concerns over wide-impact weapon use.
