The Australian government has banned all products and services from Chinese AI company DeepSeek from use in its systems, citing national security concerns.
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke confirmed the decision, stating the government would act decisively when risks to national security are identified.
The public has been urged to review privacy policies for AI products, to better understand data usage.
DeepSeek’s AI model, launched in January, disrupted the global tech market by competing with major AI platforms at lower costs.
Its release contributed to a significant market drop for AI chip maker Nvidia.
While the government has restricted the use of DeepSeek, individuals are free to use the app.
Employment Minister Murray Watt said Australians should “think carefully” about the app’s security implications.
AI services like ChatGPT remain available, despite the United States Department of Home Affairs suspending their use since May 2023.
