Recent data from Bowel Cancer Australia has revealed that those born after 1990 face twice the risk of colon cancer, and four times the risk of rectal cancer, compared to people born in 1950.
Bowel cancer is now the deadliest cancer for Australians aged 25 to 44, with diagnoses rising sharply among younger people.
Experts have linked the increase to sedentary lifestyles and diets high in processed foods and sugar.
Despite rising cases, current government screening only targets those aged 45 and over, with no plans to expand screening to younger people.
A 2023 report from medical journal BMJ Open found that age bias can delay diagnosis in younger patients, reducing their chances of early detection and survival.
Advocates are calling for free bowel cancer screening for all age groups to address the growing health crisis.
