The Federal Government has announced it will inject an additional 1.7 billion dollars into public hospitals to improve emergency care, reduce ambulance ramping, and cut waiting lists.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the funding would increase the government’s contribution by 12 per cent, raising total hospital funding to 33.91 billion dollars by 2026.
Health Minister Mark Butler described the deal as a “landmark agreement” to address mounting pressures from an ageing population, rising illness rates, and the lingering effects of COVID-19.
The announcement aims to reinforce Labor’s focus on strengthening Medicare, following measures like tripling the bulk-billing incentive and establishing urgent care clinics.
With voters potentially heading to the polls before May, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Labor’s commitment to healthcare, declaring, “Labor created Medicare and will protect it”.
