US President Donald Trump has announced plans for the United States to take over the Gaza Strip, resettle Palestinians elsewhere, and redevelop the area economically.
Speaking alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump described Gaza as a “demolition site” and proposed transforming it into the “Riviera of the Middle East.”
The plan, which lacks specific details, has contradicted decades of US policy supporting Gaza as part of a future Palestinian state.
Following the announcement, the Australian government reiterated its unchanged position supporting a two-state solution in the Middle East.
President Trump has also suggested neighbouring countries like Egypt and Jordan permanently resettle displaced Palestinians.
Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri rejected the proposal, calling it a recipe for chaos.
Saudi Arabia also issued a statement opposing the forced displacement of Palestinians, reaffirming its support for a Palestinian state as a condition for normalising ties with Israel.
