Mongkok Tea House

The practice of yum cha tea drinking, which has been an integral part Hong Kong’s cultural history, has evolved in past decades. Providing more than just tea and refreshment, tea houses also had an important social function as a place where people could develop guanxi relationships, exchange news and ideas, and conduct business. A traditional musical band takes the stage nightly at Mong Kok, which also offers a lively ambiance and a good selection of classic pub food. The club has happy hour specials and an snacks menu that showcases culinary favorites like meat pie and mashed potatoes with onion gravy.

Niubi

Niubi is one of those, an ambitious Asian fusion restaurant in a historic Chinatown building, with young owners who schooled up at nearby Crystal Jade. Co-owner Carr Lam says “integrity” and “humble” are their watchwords. The menu plucks from Cantonese, Malaysian and Thai, as well as offering cheese-covered macaroni-studded mash-ups with anything-goes exuberance. Hotpots and gloves-on crab dishes make this a great feast-with-friends place though there are “solo” noodle and rice dishes, too.

Melbourne Eats : Hawker Hall / Tonka

Hawker Hall

In the ‘90s, restaurateur Chris Lucas lived in Japan for three years. More than half of his time was spent travelling through Asia, immersed in its food culture. Such was the inspiration for Hawker Hall, the fourth addition to The Lucas Group, after Chin Chin, Kong and Baby. Like its sister restaurants, Hawker Hall has inimitable energy. This food more or less demands a salving beer to accompany it. With 18 taps on-site, there are plenty to choose from, including the house brand, Shiki.
