A new report from the eSafety Commissioner has put Tech Giants under scrutiny, highlighting alarming shortcomings in the tackling of online child sexual abuse content.

Apple and Microsoft have admitted to not proactively detecting abuse material on iCloud and OneDrive, while platforms like Skype, FaceTime, and Discord lacked measures to prevent live-streamed abuse.

Meta was criticised for not sharing information on banned accounts across its services, potentially allowing offenders to continue abuse on different platforms.

Additionally, Google services failed to block links to known child abuse sites, and Snapchat was found to lack technology to detect grooming.

eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant has mandated these companies to report their child abuse content measures biannually.

The commissioner also called for more powers to combat the rise of deepfake child sexual abuse material, noting the severe and lasting impact on victims.

Responses to the report from the companies are due by February 2025.
