The manhunt for suspected gunman Dezi Freeman has entered its seventh day in Porepunkah, northeastern Victoria. Freeman remains at large after allegedly opening fire last Tuesday on two senior detectives — Neal Thompson and Vadim De Waart — during a police raid at his home. Both officers were killed. The 56-year-old then fled into the bush carrying high-powered firearms.
Police say Freeman is an experienced bush survivalist familiar with the mountainous terrain, making the search more difficult. More than 450 officers, along with armored vehicles and helicopters, have been deployed in the large-scale operation. However, progress has been hampered by bad weather and heavy snow. Authorities say no confirmed sightings or new leads have emerged so far.
Freeman’s wife, Amalia, and their 15-year-old son were briefly arrested but later released without charges. In a public statement, Amalia expressed condolences to the families of the slain officers, distanced herself from her husband’s anti-authority views, and made a direct plea for him to surrender. She also urged anyone assisting him to immediately contact police.
The shooting has cast a heavy shadow over the small tourism-dependent town, normally busy during the ski season. While businesses and schools have reopened, the mood remains tense, with residents fearful the town will forever be linked to the tragedy. Authorities continue to warn the public to stay clear of the search area and to call 000 immediately if Freeman is spotted, without approaching him.
