According to Xinhua News Agency, Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone conversation on the evening of November 24, exchanging views on China-U.S. relations and the Taiwan issue. Xi reiterated that Taiwan’s reunification with China is an important part of the post-World War II international order and noted that China and the U.S. had once jointly fought fascism and militarism, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the achievements of World War II today. Trump stated that China played an important role in the Allied victory and that the U.S. understands the significance of the Taiwan issue for China.
The report highlighted Xi’s review of last month’s China-U.S. meeting in Busan, South Korea, noting that many important agreements were reached, which provided momentum for the steady progress of China-U.S. relations and sent a positive signal to the international community. Xi stressed that China and the U.S. “both benefit from cooperation and suffer from confrontation,” urging both sides to maintain the right direction, expand areas of cooperation, narrow the list of contentious issues, and open up new space for bilateral relations to benefit the peoples of both countries and the world.
Trump, in a social media post, said the call went smoothly, covering issues including the Russia-Ukraine situation, fentanyl, soybeans, and other agricultural agreements. He described the conversation as a follow-up to the Busan meeting and said progress had been made in implementing multiple agreements. Trump also announced that he had accepted Xi’s invitation to visit China in April next year, and Xi would make a reciprocal visit to the U.S. Trump noted that both leaders agreed that frequent communication is crucial, though no details regarding Taiwan were mentioned.
