Labor Party’s Response to Nepotism Investigation Criticized

The Australian Labor Government recently released a report on “nepotism appointments” led by Lynelle Briggs. The report highlighted that in the past, appointments to public agency boards often favored cronies, lacked transparency, and sometimes were rushed before elections, sparking public dissatisfaction with political patronage.

However, the Labor Government rejected key recommendations, such as limiting pre-election appointments and prohibiting former politicians or assistants from quickly obtaining new positions after leaving office. Instead, they proposed a new “appointment framework,” emphasizing professionalism, transparency, and diversity, without embedding reforms into law.

This approach drew criticism from cross-party senators, anti-corruption groups, and public integrity advocates, who warned that nepotism could persist without legal enforcement. The government argued that the new framework covers most recommendations and stressed that appointments should be based on ability and qualifications, not political connections.
