Nauru President David Adeang visited Jiangmen City in Guangdong Province, southern China, for a special “ancestral roots” trip to trace his family lineage. This marks his second visit to Jiangmen in less than seven months, strengthening ties with his ancestral community.
President Adeang’s grandfather left Guangdong over a century ago to seek opportunities overseas, giving this trip significant historical meaning across generations. During the visit, he participated in traditional Lunar New Year activities, received a warm welcome from locals, and remarked that he no longer felt like a stranger but as part of the family. He also stated that such people-to-people exchanges help strengthen friendship between China and Nauru.
The visit also had potential future cooperation implications. President Adeang toured a solar energy technology plant and noted that collaboration in solar energy could accelerate Nauru’s energy transition, moving the island nation from partial to 100% renewable energy use. Renewable energy development may become a new avenue for cooperation with China.
