The Women’s Asian Cup final was held at Sydney’s Australia Stadium, where the Australian women’s national soccer team, the Matildas, lost 0-1 to Japan, once again missing out on the championship. This was the team’s fifth appearance in a final, but they have only won the title twice, and this record remained unchanged.

The match drew 74,397 spectators. Australia started actively, with forwards Sam Kerr and Mary Fowler creating multiple threats, but they failed to convert them into goals. Within the first two minutes, Kerr’s shot was saved by Japanese goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita. Australia continued to apply pressure, with Caitlin Foord also missing several good chances.

Japan gradually stabilized after withstanding the early pressure and broke the deadlock in the 16th minute of the first half. Forward Maika Hamano took a shot from outside the box, the ball went over goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, and it became the only goal of the match.

Trailing, Australia kept searching for equalizing opportunities in the second half, but a lack of finishing proved decisive. Foord had two excellent chances before and after halftime but failed to score, while substitutes Hayley Raso and Emily van Egmond were also unable to change the outcome. In the final moments, defender Alanna Kennedy’s header was firmly caught by Yamashita, and Japan ultimately held on for the win.

Japan claimed their third Asian Cup title in team history, while Australia lost in the final for the fourth consecutive time. Despite playing at home and controlling much of the game, the Matildas ultimately failed to capitalize on their chances, extending their title drought since 2010.
