Australia’s Diesel Reserves Face Crisis

Published

According to an ABC report, the government’s latest simulation forecasts indicate that if Australia’s diesel reserves drop to a 10-day level, the government will be forced to implement strict nationwide rationing.

Diesel is the lifeblood of the Australian economy; virtually all critical supply chains—from logistics and transportation to agricultural harvesting, mining, and emergency services—are heavily reliant on diesel. The simulation warns that once reserves fall below a critical threshold, the government will prioritize medical, defense, and food transportation needs, while the general public and commercial activities will face long-term fuel restrictions. Australia’s current self-sufficiency rate for liquid fuels is extremely low, and the country relies heavily on overseas supply chains that are vulnerable to geopolitical influences; any disruption to maritime trade could paralyze the nation.

Although the federal government has attempted to increase strategic reserves and subsidize domestic refineries, experts criticize the progress as insufficient to withstand global supply shocks, urging authorities to accelerate the energy transition or adopt more aggressive fuel stockpiling measures.
