On March 4, 2026, British counter-terrorism police arrested three men (aged 39, 43, and 68) across London and Wales. They are accused of violating the National Security Act 2023 by allegedly assisting China’s intelligence service.

The 39-year-old suspect, David Taylor, is the husband of Joani Reid, a Scottish Labour MP (Member of Parliament) who sits on the influential Home Affairs Select Committee. Taylor is no stranger to politics; he is a former Labour adviser and current director of the think tank Asia House. He also runs a lobbying firm called Earthcott Limited.

Security Minister Dan Jarvis confirmed this relates to “foreign interference targeting UK democracy”. Joani Reid also issued a firm statement distancing herself from the case, emphasizing that she has never been to China or spoken on China-related matters in Parliament, was completely unaware of any illegal activities, and she and her children are not part of the investigation and requested privacy.
