Hungarian authorities recently seized an armored cash transport belonging to Ukraine and detained seven Ukrainian bank employees, sparking a diplomatic dispute. The transport, belonging to the state-owned Oschadbank, was moving funds from Austria back to Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials stated that Hungary seized $40 million USD, €35 million, and around 9 kilograms of gold in Budapest, criticizing the action as tantamount to “hostage-taking and asset seizure” and demanding clarification.
Hungary defended its actions, citing a money laundering investigation and questioning the source of the funds, noting that transporting such large amounts of cash and gold in an armored vehicle is unusual.
Tensions between Hungary and Ukraine were already strained over energy issues, particularly Russian oil pipelines passing through Ukraine to Hungary, further intensifying the diplomatic conflict. Ukraine said it would appeal to the EU to clarify the legality of Hungary’s seizure and detention of personnel.
