A recent investigation by the ABC has uncovered a disturbing case of digital manipulation following the death of Lebanese journalist Ali Hassan Shoeib in a targeted strike. After the journalist was killed by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) fire while reporting near the border, a video began circulating on social media appearing to show the individual confessing to ties with militant groups.
However, digital forensic experts and fact-checkers have flagged the footage as a probable AI-generated ‘deepfake’. Analysts pointed to unnatural facial mapping and synthetic audio artifacts as evidence of manipulation. The journalist’s family and colleagues have condemned the video as a ‘digital execution’, accusing the perpetrators of attempting to assassinate the victim’s character after taking his life. While the IDF has not formally confirmed the origin of the video, international press freedom advocacy groups are calling for an independent inquiry into the use of AI-driven misinformation as a weapon of war.
