Russia Launches Drone Attack on Ukraine with Nearly 400 Drones; World Heritage Site Hit

Russia recently launched a large-scale drone attack on Ukraine, causing multiple casualties and marking one of the largest airstrikes to date. A historic district in the western city of Lviv, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was also affected. Ukrainian officials said the attack left at least three people dead and 30 injured, with multiple buildings damaged and fires breaking out.

The Ukrainian Air Force noted that Russia launched nearly 400 drones at Ukraine during daylight hours, a departure from its previous tactic of conducting large-scale airstrikes primarily at night. Videos circulating online show a drone crashing into a building next to a church in Lviv’s historic center. Located about 60 kilometers from the Polish border, Lviv is a major cultural and transportation hub in Ukraine.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Svyrydenko stated that Russia had attacked densely populated city centers during the day. The Ukrainian Air Force also warned that drone activity had been detected over more than ten regions nationwide, with air defense systems near Kyiv operating around the clock to intercept them.

Prior to this daytime attack, Russia had already launched nighttime airstrikes on multiple locations in Ukraine, resulting in at least five deaths.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy stated that at least 11 regions across the country had suffered damage and once again called on allies to provide more air defense weapons.

Commentary:

Over the past year, under U.S. mediation, Russia and Ukraine have discussed the possibility of a ceasefire or negotiations on multiple occasions, but no substantial progress has been made. Russia has consistently rejected ceasefire proposals and continued to exert pressure through military operations. As a result, the negotiation process has been extremely slow, if not completely stalled. The current situation appears even more contradictory: while diplomatic channels continue to attempt to maintain dialogue, there are no signs of any letup in attacks on the battlefield.

Of particular concern is the pressure Ukraine may face due to insufficient air defense capabilities. As the U.S. shifts its military resources and strategic focus toward the Middle East, military support for Ukraine may be affected. Ukraine has long relied on Western-supplied air defense systems and missiles to fend off Russian airstrikes; any disruption in these supplies would directly undermine its defensive capabilities.
