South African President Cyril Ramaphosa recently criticized a policy by U.S. President Donald Trump offering refugee status to white Afrikaners in South Africa, calling it “racist” and based on misinformation.
Ramaphosa said the Trump administration has long claimed that white farmers in South Africa are facing “white genocide,” which has no factual basis. While South Africa does face serious crime issues, victims come from various ethnic groups, not specifically targeting white farmers.
The Trump administration, which began implementing the policy in 2025, argued that some white Afrikaners face discrimination and violence. South Africa contends that this narrative misleads the international community and ignores the historical inequalities stemming from apartheid.
The White House defended the policy as a humanitarian measure. Nevertheless, the controversial plan has heightened diplomatic tensions between South Africa and the U.S. and sparked broader international debates about race, history, and immigration policy.
