Victoria and Tasmania Introduce Free Public Transport Amid Fuel Crisis

Rising fuel prices across Australia, driven by global tensions and unstable supply, have prompted state-level responses, with Victoria and Tasmania introducing temporary free public transport measures to ease cost-of-living pressures. However, New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia have indicated they are not currently considering similar policies.

The Victorian government announced that from March 31, all train, tram and bus services across the state will be free throughout April. Passengers will not be required to tap on, and thousands of additional services will be added to meet expected demand. Premier Jacinta Allan said the measure is intended as short-term relief in response to rising fuel costs.

Tasmania has introduced a longer free transport period, running from March 30 to June 30, covering bus and ferry services. Authorities estimate commuters could save tens of dollars per week, though no immediate increase in services is planned, with adjustments to be made based on passenger demand.

Several other states have taken a more cautious stance. New South Wales Transport Minister John Graham said the fuel crisis could last longer than a month, and short-term free transport measures may not address longer-term impacts, adding the government would retain policy flexibility. Western Australia Premier Roger Cook said fares in the state are already relatively low and do not require further reductions, while Queensland will maintain its existing flat low-fare system. The South Australian government noted it has already provided relief through free travel for seniors and discounted fares for students.

The federal government said national fuel reserves remain stable and that legislation will be used to support supply chains, but ruled out proposals such as halving the fuel excise. State leaders have held emergency meetings to coordinate responses, underscoring the growing economic and social impact of the fuel crisis nationwide.
