Federal Government Believes Fuel Supply Secure ‘Well Into’ May

According to an ABC report on April 6, Australian Energy Minister Chris Bowen officially announced on Monday that, following consultations with international suppliers and Asian allies, Australia has secured enough fuel shipments to last “well into May.” Bowen emphasized that although the situation in the Middle East has led to a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and disrupted global crude oil flows, Australia has temporarily avoided an imminent energy crisis through a diversified supply chain strategy. He noted that ships currently in transit and those already scheduled will ensure that service stations and commercial transport across the country remain operational in the coming weeks, and the public need not panic-buy.

Bowen also confirmed that the federal government has reached agreements with refineries in Singapore, South Korea, and Japan to prioritize exports to Australia. Since Australia relies on imports for about 90% of its refined fuel, this assurance that supplies will “continue well into May” is crucial for stabilizing domestic economic sentiment. Bowen explained that while international oil prices have risen due to the conflict, ensuring supply levels can sustain operations through the first week of May—and potentially extend into mid-to-late May—is the government’s current strategic priority. He also mentioned that Prime Minister Albanese will visit Singapore after Easter to finalize long-term reciprocal agreements.

Although the minister conveyed confidence in sufficient supply, this statement about supplies lasting “well into May” still leaves room for flexibility. Bowen acknowledged that fuel security ultimately depends on the evolution of the conflict in the Persian Gulf, and the situation beyond June remains uncertain. The Labor government is currently closely monitoring global maritime logistics to prevent any disruptions caused by blockades of shipping lanes. With the November Victorian state election and mounting federal pressure, Bowen pledged to maintain transparency and, if necessary, activate the National Emergency Fuel Reserve Plan to address any sudden disruptions.
