To mark the 250th anniversary of US independence, King Charles III and Queen Camilla began a four-day state visit to the United States on April 28, meeting US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. It is King Charles’s first state visit to the US since his accession in 2022.
During the visit, the Trumps hosted the royal couple at the White House, including a tour of newly expanded beehive installations on the South Lawn. Charles and Camilla later attended a garden party at the British Embassy in Washington, where they met government officials and political figures. Trump repeatedly referred to Charles as a “friend” and said the visit could help stabilise bilateral relations.
However, the trip takes place against a complex backdrop. Washington had recently experienced a weekend shooting incident in which a gunman opened fire at a hotel, with authorities believing the president and his team were potential targets. The incident prompted a review of security arrangements ahead of the royal visit. At the same time, tensions over Iran policy, Trump’s criticism of the UK’s position, and leaked Pentagon documents suggesting Washington may reconsider its stance on British sovereignty over the Falkland Islands have all added pressure to UK–US relations.
King Charles is expected to deliver a speech at a White House state dinner and, in a rare move, address the US Congress, emphasising shared democratic, legal and social traditions, while signalling cooperation. He is also expected to refer to the shooting incident and express friendship toward the American people.
Commentary
King Charles’s visit is clearly more than a ceremonial state occasion. Against the backdrop of trade disputes, disagreements over Iran, and increasingly open political friction, UK–US relations are showing visible strain. In this context, the monarchy is being used as a form of “soft diplomacy” to preserve goodwill where formal politics struggles.
While the visit may temporarily ease tensions, it is unlikely to resolve deeper policy disagreements. Even Trump’s personal warmth towards Charles cannot mask the structural and strategic divides between the two countries.
