Victoria to Trial “Low-Sensory Voting” for 2026 State Election

Victoria will roll out Australia’s largest-ever “low-sensory voting” trial across all 88 Legislative Assembly districts in the 2026 state election, allowing voters to cast their ballots in environments with reduced noise, softer lighting, lower visual stimulation, and fewer crowds.

The initiative is designed to support voters who are sensitive to environmental stimuli, including people with autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as carers who require low-stress environments.

The Victorian Electoral Commission said the voting centres will be located in safer and more familiar venues, and will be separate from regular early voting and election day polling places to minimise disruption and stress.

The low-sensory voting sessions will open on a designated time the day before election day, operating from 10am to 4pm on November 17, ahead of the start of standard early voting.

In addition, the Commission will strengthen rules around campaigning outside polling stations, including establishing a six-metre buffer zone, restricting direct contact between candidates or campaigners and voters, and requiring them to distribute materials only when invited, in order to reduce sensory overload for voters.

Commentary:

The low-sensory voting trial introduced by Victoria may appear to be a minor procedural adjustment, but it reflects a broader effort to make democratic participation more inclusive and accessible.

While voting is compulsory in Australia, being required to vote does not automatically mean that everyone can do so with ease. Fairness is no longer defined solely by the principle of “one person, one vote,” but is increasingly concerned with the real-world barriers and experiences of different individuals during the process. Democracy is not only about guaranteeing the right to vote, but also about rethinking how voting can be made easier, less stressful, and genuinely accessible to all.
