US government pushes proposal for $250 bill featuring Trump’s portrait

The US government has recently advanced a controversial proposal to issue a $250 banknote featuring the portrait of Donald Trump, in order to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence later this year. However, under current US law, living individuals are prohibited from appearing on currency, meaning the plan would first require Congress to amend existing legislation.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that a bill has already been introduced in Congress seeking to revise the rules, which would allow Trump to become the first living person to appear on US paper currency. He noted that the Treasury Department is conducting preliminary preparations for the potential new banknote, but emphasised that the final decision rests with Congress.

According to The Washington Post, some Treasury officials had previously instructed design teams to produce prototype $250 bills featuring Trump’s portrait, raising questions about whether the plan violates current federal law. The design is reportedly being handled by British artist Ian Alexander.

Defending the proposal, Bessent said that featuring a sitting president on a commemorative banknote during the United States’ 250th anniversary would not be inappropriate. He argued that it would serve as an important symbol of national history rather than personal worship.

Under US law, since 1866 it has been prohibited for any living person’s image to appear on currency, bonds, or other government securities. This rule has been in place for more than 160 years and is considered an important principle to prevent personality cults and preserve institutional neutrality.

Analysts note that even if the bill gains support in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, it would still need to reach the 60-vote threshold in the Senate to pass. With Republicans currently holding only 53 seats, the proposal remains highly uncertain.

Commentary:

Figures featured on banknotes are typically among the most important historical figures of a country, representing individuals who have had a significant impact on national development and symbolising a nation’s culture and values. By this standard, Donald Trump, as a sitting president, is undoubtedly a highly influential and controversial figure in global politics. However, proposing to place his portrait on currency while he is still in office could easily be perceived as elevating personal image and even bordering on a form of personality cult.

Moreover, the meaning of the United States’ 250th anniversary should be to reflect on the nation’s broader history and the collective institutions and values built by its people, rather than focusing on a single sitting political figure. Commemorating national history is fundamentally about constructing collective identity, not highlighting individual achievement.
