Australia has achieved further success at the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, with athletics emerging as one of the major highlights.

In the men’s 100m final, 22-year-old sprint rising star Lachlan Kennedy clocked 9.85 seconds, breaking the Australian national record that had been held by Patrick Johnson for 23 years, while also securing a silver medal.

In the women’s 100m, 21-year-old Torrie Lewis broke the Australian record again after the semi-final, running 10.99 seconds to win bronze. She became the first Australian female sprinter to break the 11-second barrier.

The women’s high jump also brought success, with Eleanor Patterson clearing 1.96 metres to equal the Commonwealth Games record. She defeated world champion and teammate Nicola Olyslagers, allowing Australia to claim both gold and silver medals.

In long-distance events, Ky Robinson won gold in the men’s 10,000m, continuing Australia’s strong performance. In swimming, Lani Pallister won gold in the women’s 800m freestyle and broke the Games record, completing a clean sweep of the 400m, 800m and 1,500m freestyle titles at this year’s event.

In addition, Australia secured two more gold medals in artistic gymnastics. By the fifth day of competition, Australia had won nine gold medals that day, bringing its total to 35 golds and maintaining a strong overall performance.

The achievements of young athletes such as Kennedy and Lewis, who continue to break records, reflect the continued growth of Australia’s sprinting strength. Many believe they have the potential to achieve further success at future international competitions.

Commentary:

Australia’s strong performance at the Commonwealth Games has once again highlighted the sense of unity and national pride that sport can bring, while also showing the success of a new generation of athletes taking over.

However, behind this achievement, the result also brings renewed attention to Victoria’s decision to withdraw from hosting this year’s Games.Victoria originally had the opportunity to host the event, but ultimately cancelled after projected costs increased significantly. This meant the state missed a major opportunity to showcase itself internationally, boost tourism, and support economic development.

Glasgow ultimately stepped in at short notice and successfully delivered the event, demonstrating that with proper planning, the Commonwealth Games can still provide international influence and economic benefits.
