The Australian government has announced an additional $4.6 billion AUD ($3.2 billion USD) investment to expand and modernize the state-owned Osborne Naval Shipyard in South Australia, paving the way for the domestic construction of nuclear-powered submarines under the AUKUS defense pact.
Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Richard Marles emphasized that the capital injection demonstrates steady progress in the AUKUS program and will significantly boost Australia’s capacity to build, operate, and maintain advanced nuclear submarines locally.
As Australia’s most expensive defense project in history, the AUKUS agreement is projected to cost up to $250 billion USD over the next three decades. Under the roadmap, Australia will first acquire three Virginia-class submarines from the United States before co-developing and constructing the next-generation SSN-AUKUS submarines with the United Kingdom in the 2040s. Despite concerns regarding supply chain bottlenecks in US and UK shipyards, Canberra remains committed to building sovereign defense capabilities through massive domestic infrastructure spending.
