Moonshot AI’s recent unveiling of Kimi K3, a 28 trillion-parameter open-source model, has ignited discussions among influencers and the public on X regarding its potential to rival top closed-source systems.
Scheduled for release on 27 July, Kimi K3 is praised for its coding and reasoning capabilities, challenging the notion that advanced AI must remain proprietary. However, concerns about enterprise trust, inference costs, and geopolitical implications have also emerged, according to GlobalData. Shreyasee Majumder, a Social Media Analyst at GlobalData, noted that Kimi K3 represents a pivotal moment in the AI market, with open-weight models advancing rapidly. Influencers predict increased pricing pressure across the value chain, shifting focus from model performance to enterprise integration and trust.
Despite its competitive pricing, it has been warned that Kimi K3’s real-world costs may rival those of proprietary models due to higher token usage. Furthermore, the K3 model is able to compete with the most advanced U.S. systems, such as GPT and Claude, and in some tasks even outperform them – all for free. Following the release of K3, the United States and Anthropic again leveled accusations of distillation of American models – training one model on the outputs of another. Moonshot denies these accusations. However, concerns among American companies and government agencies point to possible consequences for the global AI ecosystem, such as IP thefts, surveillance and espionage.
US President Trump’s Science and Technology adviser Michael Kratsios said Moonshot AI carried out the campaign through what is known as distillation – when a weaker AI model extracts answers from a stronger one. Moonshot also gained access to restricted cutting-edge Nvidia servers to train its models, Kratsios said in a social post on Wednesday. In response to queries from the BBC, the Chinese embassy in Washington referred to remarks made by foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian on Wednesday, saying China opposes the “politicising” of trade and tech issues.
