Former Mildura Business Owner Sentenced Over Dog Shooting

A former business owner from Mildura, in regional Victoria, has been officially sentenced in the local Magistrates’ Court following convictions related to the shooting of a pet dog.

The court heard that the incident occurred after a neighbor’s pet dog wandered onto the offender’s rural property. In a fit of anger over alleged property disturbance, the offender retrieved a registered firearm and shot the small dog, inflicting severe injuries.

Defense counsel presented evidence to the court indicating that the defendant had been suffering from acute stress, sleep deprivation, and severe anxiety following the economic collapse of his local business. The defense argued that prolonged psychological pressure, coupled with ongoing noise disturbances, severely impaired his emotional regulation, causing him to irrationally snap when the dog trespassed onto his land.

Magistrate details revealed that the accused faced multiple charges under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 and the Firearms Act 1996, including aggravated animal cruelty, discharge of a firearm in a reckless manner, and failure to safely store ammunition.

In handing down the sentence, the Magistrate described the act as “callous and completely disproportionate,” emphasizing that pets are sensitive living creatures rather than target practice for frustrated property owners. The offender was sentenced to a 12-month Community Correction Order, ordered to pay substantial fines and legal costs, and issued a mandatory 5-year prohibition order against owning or being in charge of any domestic animals.
