Australians talked about toilet paper and ‘getting on the beers’ more than ever before on Tinder in 2020, a study from the dating giant has revealed.
The research showed chit chat turned to conversation about the state of the world after the outbreak of the pandemic, with singles sharing fears about health and the uncertainty of the future.
Panic buying and toilet paper
Mentions of loo roll increased by 290 percent between 2019 and 2020 as frenzied panic buying gripped the nation during the early days of the COVID crisis.
Meanwhile the toilet paper emoji was used 60 times more in March than in the previous month.
Collective shrugs
Tinder was the place to despair about the unbridled chaos of 2020. with the most-used emoji being the man with his arms raised in a shrug as users shared their fears and uncertainty about the future.
‘Getting on the beers’
Phrases like ‘can’t wait until [Victorian Premier] Dan Andrews announces it’s time to get on the beers, then neck one like [former Prime Minister] Bob Hawke’ suddenly appeared in bios across the country after lockdown was announced on March 23.
Physically distant but together in spirit
