5 ways to save at art galleries and museums

Tip # 1

Top institutions such as the Art Gallery of NSW, Canberra’s National Gallery of Australia, and the National Gallery of Victoria have free entry and some offer free tours. But you may still have to book for a Covid-safe timed visit.

Tip # 2

Become a member of major museums to receive money-saving benefits. “An adult annual membership will cost less than $100 but unlocks free membership at sister organisations, sometimes free entry to paid exhibitions, as well as shop, cafe, and parking discounts – ideal when travelling interstate,” Katie Russell says.

Tip # 3

Cultural apps guide you for free. Sydney Culture Walks, curated by the City of Sydney, points out 400 historical and public art spots. Melbourne Dreaming offers self-guided tours of the city’s history and Aboriginal points of interest. Soundtrails explores places of Aboriginal significance.

Tip # 4

Look local. Information and tourist offices in regional towns offer insider information. And if there’s no museum or gallery in town, a local library often acts as a community hub.

Tip # 5

Consider a hotel package that includes entry to a touring exhibition. Canberra’s Mercure, Novotel and Ibis Styles have deals for the Botticelli to Van Gogh :Masterpieces exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia.
