With over 400,000 new infected cases and 3500 deaths every day, and hospitals with patients waiting for ventilators and oxygen support systems to survive, India is now at the focus of the world Covid pandemic. Countries including Australia, the US, UK, Germany, France and the European Union etc are sending out medical supplies like oxygen concentrators, ventilators and vaccines to support those fighting with the virus in India.
There are many theories to explain why infected cases in India increased from a daily average of 20,000 a day in early March, to 100,000 a day in early April and expected to be over 500,000 a day in probably a week. Some criticized the Indian government to be overconfident in the relaxing of social distancing during the Kumbh Mela with millions of pilgrims took the holy dip in the Ganga from January to April. Others believed that even India has produced the biggest quantities of Covid-19 vaccines in the world, the present vaccinated population is still below 10%, which is a failure in the government in securing enough protection for the people. The health system is now overwhelmed and collapsed to the extent that experts expected the death rate would increase soon.
On the other hand, there is fake news circulating that the drastic situation in India was not true but just propaganda by the western government and media. However, the reality is that many countries in the world including Australia have forbidden Indians to enter to protect themselves from being affected.
It is time the world should think about what can be done to support the Indians to face the Covid crisis which becomes uncontrollable. Yes, everybody in the world is under the threat from Covid, but thank God that Australians are successful in keeping the virus in control. It is time that we should be serious in considering what we can offer to those in greatest need.
