Katie Hopkins deported

Far right British commentator Katie Hopkins is set to be deported after bragging on social media about flouting COVID safety rules while in hotel quarantine in Sydney.

Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews confirmed that Ms Hopkins’ visa had been cancelled.

“I think her behaviour is absolutely appalling,” Ms Andrews said.

“I am very happy that this individual is going to be out of this country as soon as possible.”

In a post on Instagram, now removed, Ms Hopkins said she was taunting the hotel guards by answering her door naked and not wearing a mask.

“The police officer who checked me in told me when they knock on my door I have to wait 30 seconds ’til I can open the door [to collect food],” she said in the Instagram Live video which is no longer viewable on her account.

“Then I can open the door but only if I wear a face mask.

“What I want is the sergeant in the foyer to come up and tell me off so that I can stand there naked while he tells me off.”

Ms Hopkins also described lockdowns as the “biggest hoax”.

The provocative post came as 12 million Australians were locked down in NSW and Victoria.

Ms Andrews said a review conducted by the Australian Border Force found that Ms Hopkins breached quarantine rules.

“When those decisions were made, Border Force acted very quickly to cancel the visa.”

Hopkins arrived in Australia last week after being granted a travel exemption and was set to appear as a contestant on the Seven Network show Big Brother.

Ms Hopkins’ Twitter account was permanently suspended last year for violations of its ‘hateful conduct’ policy.

She was fired from her UK radio show after calling for a “final solution” following the Manchester Arena bombing in 2017 and has compared migrants to cockroaches.

Seven Network and Endemol Shine Australia confirm that Katie Hopkins is not part of Big Brother VIP.”

Ms Hopkins was granted a critical skills visa to enter the country with the support of the NSW Government.

The move has prompted fury at a time when thousands of Australians remain stranded overseas.

Ms Andrews said she understood the anger and frustration being felt by Australians wanting to come home.

“I know how galling it is for Australians who want their families to come and visit, they want to be able to leave and undertake work overseas, it is absolutely galling for them to see the likes of that individual come in here and just flaunt the quarantine rules,” Ms Andrews said.

“It is appalling but she did come in over quarantine cap, that is not an excuse at all, but she didn’t take the place over an Australian in need coming back. And she will be leaving.”

Ms Andrews said various state governments had pushed “very hard” for the hotel quarantine caps to be reduced in light of the latest outbreak of the Delta COVID variant but she believed they should be increased as soon as possible.

“I think we should have be looking to increase our hotel quarantine caps back to where they were and potentially beyond as soon as possible, because there are many Australians who want to come home,” she said.
