It’s been a gruelling 20 months for many Victorians who have gone in and out of lockdown, but on Friday the state is set to welcome a raft of new freedoms — and will potentially say goodbye to some COVID-19 restrictions once and for all.
“[H]ere in Melbourne, very sadly, we’ve endured the longest lockdown in the world,” Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said during a September 2021 interview. “Consider that. The longest lockdown in the world here in Melbourne.”
The Victorian premier, Daniel Andrews, confirmed the move on Friday after Scott Morrison flagged that Australia would soon ease travel restrictions with Singapore and Qantas announced it would bring forward the resumption of international flights.
As restrictions on movement ease in Australia’s two biggest cities, the shape of the post-pandemic working week is rapidly coming up for debate between employers and employees. But the question troubling some urban commentators is not just how many days will be spent working from home, but which ones.
