MediSecure, an electronic prescriptions provider, revealed on Thursday that nearly 13 million Australians have been affected in a cyber-attack, which occurred earlier this year, making it one of the nation’s largest.
The breach was detected on April 13, with stolen data that included sensitive personal details such as names, addresses, Medicare numbers, and prescription details.
Users of the MediSecure provider from March 2019 to November 2023, have been impacted, with some of the data now available on the dark web.
The federal government and the National Cyber Security Coordinator, Lieutenant General Michelle McGuinness, warned against accessing stolen data online, highlighting potential legal risks.
Following the breach, MediSecure went into administration, with eRx Script Exchange continuing as the sole electronic prescription provider.
Impacted individuals should remain vigilant for scams referencing information obtained from the breach.
