A new report by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry has recommended modernising air and seaport passenger processing by abolishing incoming passenger cards.
The Chamber has warned that these cards, which require passengers to declare various items and provide personal details, were antiquated and harmed Australia’s reputation as a desirable tourist destination.
Additionally, the report suggested replacing the SmartGate system with “passenger on the move” technology, as well as ensuring there was adequate air traffic to keep prices competitive.
The report highlighted the need to adopt emerging technologies, such as complex and costly visas, to streamline travel processes and reduce barriers.
John Hart, Executive Chair of the tourism arm of the ACCI, stated that reforms could generate an additional 50 billion dollars annually for the tourism industry.
