Google has revealed plans to expand its AI-powered Search Overviews in Australia, following earlier trials in the US.
The feature, powered by Google’s generative AI tool Gemini, generates summaries for complex search queries, offering advice on various topics, such as cleaning tips or solving maths problems.
However, the tool has faced criticism for publishing errors, with some examples gaining infamy including advising users to add glue to cheese and eat small rocks daily.
AI experts, including Dr. Erica Mealy from the University of the Sunshine Coast, have urged users to scrutinise AI-generated advice carefully for potential biases or mistakes.
Google has added restrictions to prevent harmful content, but the tool is still in testing.
As part of the Australian trial, a limited number of Australian users will see the overviews in their search results, as Google evaluates the feature’s performance before a full launch.
