An inquiry into electric vehicle batteries has called for urgent national reform to protect consumers from defective and dangerous e-scooters, e-bikes, and skateboards.
The New South Wales inquiry found that poor-quality batteries in personal mobility devices posed a significant fire risk, citing 272 lithium-ion battery fires in 2023, which injured 38 people.
The report has recommended inspections of personal mobility devices, as well as collaboration with online platforms to ban unsafe models.
While NSW introduced mandatory safety standards in August, the inquiry has urged a national adoption of these standards and further safety measures.
The inquiry also highlighted the need for better training for emergency responders as well as a review of building codes to address risks from electric vehicle fires.
The NSW government’s response is expected by March.
