A former worker at a Ukrainian cryptocurrency scam centre has revealed that Australians are a prime target for scammers due largely to perceptions of wealth and limited law enforcement.
The scammer, known as “Mark,” described a call centre posing as a legitimate business, luring employees with good pay and unsuspecting Australians with fraudulent investment schemes.
Private investigator Ken Gamble noted that unlike the US, which aggressively pursues international scammers, Australia has historically been slow to respond.
This insight comes as Australian Federal Police launch Operation Firestorm to tackle scams from Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe, but challenges remain in prosecuting offenders abroad.
