A Parliamentary Inquiry into child social media use has heard that only adults should be allowed to access social media in Australia, suggesting that a ban on children aged under 18 using social media would be akin to restrictions on alcohol and cigarettes.
At a recent inquiry in Canberra, parent groups and researchers argued that this change would protect children from online harm and help parents manage risks.
The current age limit of 13 is considered outdated and not in line with the present research on the issue.
However, some parties testified to the inquiry that a blanket ban could be difficult to enforce.
While some groups advocated for stricter age limits, others, including youth mental health groups, argued that tech companies should focus on blocking harmful content, instead of imposing age restrictions.
The inquiry also heard from those personally impacted, including the family members of children who committed suicide due to online bullying.
The inquiry is set to release recommendations in November.
