Renowned Australian emergency physician and former vice president of the Australian Medical Association, Dr. Stephen Parnis, recently resigned from his position as chairman of the board of the Medical Insurance Group of Australia (MIGA) after repeatedly commenting on the Israel-Gaza war on social media, which sparked controversy and pressure. He will remain on the board as an ordinary director.

In an email to MIGA members, Parnis emphasized that all his posts reflected his personal views and were not made on behalf of MIGA. He stated that his decision to step down as chairman was not made lightly, but due to ongoing controversy, he chose to resign in the best interests of the organization. He also affirmed that speaking publicly on major humanitarian issues is a responsibility doctors should not avoid, guided by conscience.

MIGA subsequently announced a comprehensive review of its social media policies to ensure governance meets modern standards and public expectations, emphasizing respect for diverse viewpoints while maintaining trust and reputation for both members and the organization in sensitive matters.

The incident has sparked strong reactions within the medical community and public opinion. Some healthcare professionals have circulated letters in support of Parnis, condemning the resignation as a “forced departure” and expressing concern that it could have a chilling effect on doctors’ freedom of speech. They warned that if physicians face pressure over public statements on international conflicts or public issues, it could reduce professional participation in public discourse.
