Copper Theft Causes Telstra Network Outage Across Mount Isa Region

Published

The remote Australian town of Mount Isa and surrounding areas in South Queensland, including Soldiers Hill and Aramac, experienced major disruptions to Telstra fibre and 3G mobile networks this week. Affected locations included Cloncurry and Julia Creek. Telstra confirmed that the outage was due to copper cable theft, which damaged the fibre infrastructure.

Rachel Cliffe, Telstra’s regional general manager, stated that technical teams had been dispatched to repair the damage and restore services, while also investigating possible links to a recent spate of fibre vandalism cases in northern Queensland and Cairns.

Because the outage impacted a core network line, some areas were left without internet, phone service, or access to banking services for an entire day, causing serious disruption to daily life and emergency communications. The surge in copper theft has also raised industry-wide concerns over public safety and infrastructure resilience.
