A serious shooting incident occurred in Porepunkah, Victoria, on 26 August 2025. Police were ambushed by 56-year-old Dezi Bird Freeman while executing a search warrant related to historical sexual assault allegations and firearms prohibition. Two officers, Neal Thompson (59) and Vadim De Waart (35), were killed on the spot, and another officer was seriously injured but has since stabilized.
Freeman was reportedly heavily armed and seized the weapons of the fallen officers. He has had connections with the “sovereign citizen” movement and is considered extremely dangerous. Police believe he may be hiding in the bush or in self-built shelters with potential traps.
Victoria Police have launched a large-scale operation involving the Special Operations Group, Armed Crime Squad, and Fugitive Squad, assisted by federal police and intelligence units. A 7.5 km no-fly zone has been established, Mount Buffalo National Park closed, and surrounding areas locked down. Adverse weather, including rain and mountain snow, has hampered the search.
Schools have reopened under alert, businesses remain open, but most residents are staying vigilant and securing their homes. Nationwide, there have been tributes to the fallen officers, including blue lights at Parliament House. Communities in Wieambilla (QLD) and Tara have also expressed support. Police urge the public not to approach Freeman if sighted and to report any information immediately.
