On 28 August 2025, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met cricketer Usman Khawaja in Parliament to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The meeting had been previously canceled due to scheduling conflicts but went ahead today.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers described it as a “good discussion” and expressed appreciation for Khawaja’s insights, saying, “We have a lot of respect for Usman and listen to him on these issues.” Khawaja praised the Prime Minister’s recognition of Palestine but suggested that Australia should go further and sanction Israel.

Albanese and Chalmers emphasized the government’s concern for Gaza and pledged additional humanitarian aid. He previously criticized Israel’s military actions as lacking legitimacy and called on the international community to protect civilians. The government is also working with other countries to ensure humanitarian aid access and prevent collective punishment of civilians. Khawaja’s involvement has increased public awareness and bolstered support for government action.
