Murdoch Family Feud Ends, Eldest Son Secures Succession

On September 8, 2025, Australian media mogul Rupert Murdoch reached an agreement with his three children: James, Elisabeth, and Prudence, ending months of family trust litigation and securing eldest son Lachlan’s inheritance of the media empire.

The dispute arose when Murdoch attempted to amend the family trust’s “irrevocable” clause to concentrate control of Fox Corporation and News Corp in Lachlan’s hands. The plan was opposed by his three children and adjudicated in a Nevada court in December 2024, which deemed Murdoch and Lachlan’s actions “malicious” and sided with the children.

The settlement grants each child over $1 billion and prohibits repurchasing shares. Fox Corp. stated the agreement concludes all litigation. Lachlan aligns politically with his father, maintaining Fox News’ conservative direction, while James resigned due to editorial disagreements. Though settled, succession dynamics may still influence Fox and News Corp.’s future stability, especially as Murdoch ages.
