Madagascar Military Leader to Be Sworn in as President

The Madagascar military announced that military leader Colonel Mihary Randrianirina will officially be sworn in as president this Friday.

This follows parliament’s vote to remove President Andry Rajoelina and escalating street protests. The military emphasized that this is not a coup but an intervention to save a nation on the brink of collapse, promising elections within 18–24 months and a restructuring of key government institutions during the transition.

The African Union has suspended Madagascar’s membership and expressed concern over the military takeover. Since 2023, protests driven by corruption and demands for political reform have erupted repeatedly, eventually prompting military intervention. The domestic situation remains unstable, and the international community is watching future developments closely.
