US authorities have conducted a pre-dawn raid on the Washington-area home of Democratic US representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, an outspoken critic of Donald Trump who has been the target of political insults by the Republican president.

A person familiar with the investigation said it was related to alleged immigration fraud, and part of the probe concerned the Somali-born politician’s immigration paperwork, which was filled out by her late father when she was a child.

The raid was carried out a little more than three weeks before the November 3 midterm elections, when Trump’s party will be trying to defend its narrow majorities in the US Congress. Speaking outside a US military air base, Donald Trump told reporters officials were looking “very carefully” into Ms Omar after the raid. He said the congresswoman was a “complainer” from a “non-country” before departing for Ohio, where he will host a rally.

Ms Omar called the search an “attempt to target political enemies and weaponise federal law enforcement”. Minnesota Democrats also condemned the raid, with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz criticizing Trump for abusing his power to go after political opponents weeks before an election.

Australia’s online safety regulator eSafety says it does not have the powers to “proactively prevent” the live stream of a firing squad execution in the United States from being shown in Australia, but argues platforms have a responsibility to protect users from harmful content.

Last week, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, convicted of killing 13 people at a military base in Texas in 2009, would be available for the public to watch. Across the political divide in Canberra there has been widespread concern about Australians seeing the December 3 live stream.

The federal government said Australians “rightly expect” the content would not appear on their screens, and platforms have a responsibility to meet those expectations. Media Lecturer at Swinburne University Dr Belinda Barnet believed the most the eSafety commissioner could do was issue take down notices, like was done in the case of a Sydney church stabbing in 2024.

“While eSafety does not have powers to proactively prevent a live stream from occurring online, online services have responsibilities under Australia’s online safety regulatory framework to protect users from harmful material,” a spokesperson said. Experts agreed eSafety’s power was more geared towards being able to take down content rather than pre-emptively blocking it.

Beijing has passed a new law of owning and using drones being illegal.

Before the new rules take effect on November 15, drone owners must move their aircraft out of the capital or dispose of them through government-approved buyback and recycling programs. This has led to Chinese citizens sending their drones overseas for their families and friends to prevent them from going to waste.

Most of China’s major cities have introduced civilian drone no-fly zones in sensitive areas, including airports, military zones, core commercial districts and government buildings. But Beijing will be the only city in China to ban the ownership of drones ; The city had already banned unapproved outdoor drone flights in August 2025, but recently stepped up its security measures after a small plane crashed into Beijing’s tallest building in June.

Hsiao-Huang Shu, a researcher at Taiwan’s Institute for National Defence and Security Research, said it was “deeply ironic” that a city in the world’s biggest consumer drone-making country was banning drone ownership. He said Beijing had already developed counter-drone systems, including electronic jamming, electronic fences and measures to destroy them, such as lasers, stating that Beijing is taking preventative action or precautions when it is already too late because the damage has already been done.
