Vaccination target for path out of pandemic

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the National Cabinet has agreed in principle on vaccine targets for Australia’s path out of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mr. Morrison said 70 per cent of eligible people need to be vaccinated to get to the next phase under the four-part plan he outlined last month. Australia will move into phase B when 70 per cent of the eligible population is double-dose vaccinated and phase C at 80 per cent.

‘Superspreader’ party at Summer Hill aged care facility in NSW

A COVID-19 outbreak at a nursing home in Sydney’s inner west has been linked to a “superspreading” Christmas in July party. An infected nurse at the Wyoming Nursing Home in Summer Hill also worked across multiple aged care facilities.

There were 13 new locally acquired cases yesterday and nine cases announced on Sunday, all linked to a “rapidly escalating” cluster around Brisbane schools. Queensland’s snap lockdown may need to last a week to defeat the more infectious Delta variant of COVID-19, according to a leading researcher.

If you are 18 or older, and in an area where there is a COVID-19 outbreak, the best vaccine for you is the one you can get right now. That possibly means you should get the AstraZeneca vaccine, as Pfizer is still in short supply.

AstraZeneca has been portrayed as a poor man’s vaccine or worse a roll of the dice with recipients changing their arm. A month ago, the ABC’s Norman Swan suggested the vaccine would be withdrawn from the market if it were not for the pandemic, an odd statement at best and one grounded in a hypothetical alternative that cannot be proven.

New study conducted in Germany and published in Nature Medicine involved 216 volunteers. Fifty-five received two doses of AstraZeneca’s viral vector vaccine, 64 received two doses of an mRNA vaccine, and 97 received a combination of one AstraZeneca dose and an mRNA booster shot.

Escaping the every day doesn’t have to mean taking a flight if you live in the Victorian capital. Here are five Melbourne ‘staycation’ ideas that will leave you feeling refreshed and revitalised.
